Modular Pedestrian Refuge Island Pilot

The City of Omaha, with funding from an AARP/Toyota grant, is launching a pilot project to improve pedestrian safety and access at two high-pedestrian traffic intersections on 24th Street at Oak Street and B Street, both located on a Vision Zero High Injury Network corridor and serviced by METRO Transit. This project will install quick-build modular pedestrian refuge islands, which enhance safety by allowing pedestrians to cross one direction of traffic at a time and provide a resting point for those with mobility challenges. These temporary islands offer a quick, cost-effective solution while the City works on permanent long-term infrastructure improvements. If successful, the City plans to expand the use of this safety tool systemically throughout Omaha’s High Injury Network.
